AGRICULTURE / QUARANTINE

As an island nation, Vanuatu is relatively free from major pest and diseases that are found in other countries. It is of vital importance to maintain this relatively pest-free status.

Please help us to keep it that way by observing the following information.

On the aircraft or on arrival you will be given a form to fill in. This is a legal document and must be filled in correctly. A yes for "Have" and a no for "Don't Have".

A Quarantine officer is available at all times should you require further information on quarantine issues.

The Vanuatu Quarantine & Inspection Service aims to prevent the entry of pests and diseases which could endanger Vanuatu’s agriculture, forestry and natural environment.

You are welcome to visit Vanuatu, but the insects and diseases that might be in the food, plant products or gifts that you are carrying are not welcome.

CUSTOMS & INLAND REVENUE

Prohibited and Restricted Goods include:

Weapons such as firearms and ammunition as per the Firearms Act (CAP 108).

Objectionable (indecent) articles such as video tapes, films, records, CD-ROMs and publications as indicated in the Obscenity Law (173).

Illicit Drugs – marijuana, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine including other forms of drugs as described in the Dangerous Drug Act (CAP 12).

Endangered species of flora and fauna and products derived from these endangered species.

It also includes fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates requiring an Import Permit from Vanuatu Quarantine & Inspection Services.

Other goods refer to goods that a person has obtained/purchased overseas and/or in Vanuatu duty free. This excludes personal effects and apparels.

Separate legal provisions deal with Personal Effects.

The amount of goods worth VT 50,000 (US$ 350, A$ 550, NZ$ 650) is applicable to each travelling person.

If a person carries his/her new or unused goods worth more than VT 50,000 (US$ 350, A$ 550,

NZ$ 650) then the difference will be assessed and tax payable. For example, VT 100,000 (US$ 700, A$ 1100, NZ$ 130) minus VT 50,000 (US$ 350, A$ 550, NZ$ 650) equals VT 50,000 (US$ 350,

A$ 550, NZ$ 650). In this scenario, duty and VAT shall be assessed based on VT 50,000 (US$ 350, A$ 550, NZ$ 650) by applying the legal duty rates currently in force.

Persons carrying gifts/goods belonging to other non-travelling persons must declare it to Customs and such goods are assessed and tax paid accordingly.

Goods imported for selling (commercial) purposes must be declared to Customs and taxes assessed are paid accordingly.

Restricted goods being imported require permits/licences. For example, frozen fish, prawns, plants and parts, meats etc…. Tax (duty and VAT) apply accordingly irrespective whether it is for personal consumption or selling purposes.

Prohibited goods are those goods categorised under the laws being totally forbidden, whether imported or exported.

Further queries or clarification of Customs procedures should be addressed to a duty Customs Officer or telephone (678) 24544 or 22462.
